[REVIEW] AK-47 Marijuana Strain – Genetics, Yield, Facts, & Pictures
When it comes to cannabis high, there is no guarantee that two people are consuming it and feeling the same way. Part of this is associated with the fact that these green herbs present a different shade of effect on every other individual. On the other hand, no two strains exhibit the same properties or impact, leading to an extensive array of influence and ‘high’er feelings that you can imagine. Naturally, every cannabis connoisseur has someday opened the world of the internet to find about a new strain that has caught their eye or when they’re looking to experiment with something different. In this article, we are particularly looking at one such marijuana strain – the AK47 strain.
Even though the name of the strain feels like the effect will blow through the roof, it is full of surprises and mellow endings that are perfect for those looking to shed their day’s worth of stress and anxiety. I will be discussing its genetics, appearance, growing info, aroma, taste, and side-effects.
Let’s get started, homies!
Overview – AK47 Strain
I know not all of you want the intimate details of a strain before getting your hands on it. For this reason, here’s a compiled summary of all the major characteristics of the strain. Have a look!
Origin & Genetics
It is said that AK-47 made its way into our cannabis world in the post-war period of the 1970s. However, it rose on the path to popularity and complete acceptance by the experts in 1992. With a strong Sativa backing, AK47 boasts of a strong lineage and has genetics that is traced back to four potent cannabis strains.
Developed by Serious Seeds in the Netherlands, the strain underwent a rework in 1999 to have uniform seeds, and since then has been one of the strains that changed the cannabis game in the 90s. The four strains used to create Ak-47 are Colombia (Sativa), Mexico (Sativa), Thai (Sativa) and Afghanistan (Indica). With 75% Sativa features, the strain is very well balanced with a 35% trace of Indica. The THC level borders around 20% whereas the CBD levels stay on the lower side (around 1.5%).
Appearance, Growing Info & Yield
The AK-47 Marijuana Strain does not project a trichome covered white beauty, but the overall look of the plant is quite appealing. It has a blend of vivid lime green colour which is paired well with red-orange pistils that curl and twist in between the sugar leaves. It has a fair amount of crystal trichomes shining through the buds, and the plant beholds a magnificent height with large calyxes. This is pretty evident of its extremely smokable buds, which leaves you feeling a buzz of creativity and bouts of relaxation – the best of both the worlds.
Ak-47 is a pretty adaptable plant, and you can grow it either indoors (soil & hydro) or outdoors. You just need a mild climate, with temperatures ranging below seventy-five degrees Fahrenheit. If you experiment and grow at a higher temperature, that yield will likely remain the same, but the buds will open up and become fluffy.
AK-47 takes eight to nine weeks to flower, and it is grown outdoors. It is usually harvested in the middle of October. If grown accurately, following the growing conditions, you can expect a yield between 350 and 500 grams per square meter.
Aroma & Taste
AK-47 Strain is mostly known as an enticing and aromatic strain that hints at its dank potency and effects in just a single whiff. Mirroring its lineage and parental genetics, it exhibits a blend of fragrance that builds up an intensive yet pleasant scent.
The most overpowering aroma is that of the earth. Pinewood, sandalwood, and floral fragrances that are overtly present and show themselves at the earliest. If you dig deeper, there is a subtle citrus aroma, just enough to dazzle your senses and splash a sensation of freshness into your soul. The result is a dank, skunky, and earthy aroma, with citrus undertones. Pleasantly enticing, isn’t it?
The taste stands true to the aromatic feel of the strain, though you can taste the floral scents much more evidently. It borderlines on spicy and sweet, with the sweetness having an upper-hand on the entire flavour. It is quite appealing to the tongue palate and does not exhibit any extreme sourness or spiciness – perfect for the newbies.
Effect – AK47 Strain
The effects of the strain do not match the name of the strain. You would expect something powerful to knock off the senses, but instead, you’re greeted with a mellow, relaxing, euphoric effect that oozes the pain, stress, and anxiety out of you.
Don’t get me wrong, the effect is still powerful & potent, which is why the strain is the winner of 16 cannabis awards! But the effects dwell more on the soothing side than the energetic one. Creative people experience the freedom to allow inspiration and talent to take over their work and is great for when you’re indulging in your art form. The slight cerebral rush makes it easy to concentrate, focus, and delve deeper into the creativity and the job at hand. It is rarely overwhelming, so your safe space and inspiring ideas are maintained.
On the physical front, it is known to calm and relax the body, almost inducing a ‘couch-lock’ type situation. Some people find it easier to laugh and giggle with the help of these beautiful green herbs, even on the darkest or heaviest days. People find it helpful, especially while relaxing and unwinding after a stressful day at work. Just find some happy, groovy music and let the effect wash over you.
The hybrid effect of the AK47 strain is the most appealing one, as nothing speaks better than having the cerebral rush coupled with just enough relaxation to put you in bed after a long day. Even the brain-high and the creative inducing part of the strain is mellow enough to just keep you on the productive path, without provoking the unnecessary paranoia. The rush is said to last for 3-4 hours.
When it comes to Medical Benefits, the AK47 Strains proves to be extremely helpful and effective to fight the psychological issues as well as the physical ones.
On the psychology part, it proves very beneficial for people suffering from mood disorders, anxiety, insomnia, stress, and depression. It provides therapeutic benefits, however, an overdose could lead to an increased feeling of paranoia and mood swings. It is recommended to keep the dose limits to a minimum and gradually bring it up if needed.
AK47 strain proves to be a boon for people going through physical and ailments, including chronic pain, nausea, lack of appetite, migraines, fatigue, etc. It can even be helpful for more serious conditions and bring relief to pains and nausea from chemotherapy and other treatments.
You have heard all the good things about this strain so far, but don’t worry. The negative effects of this strain aren’t anything different from what you usually experience while consuming pot.
You would experience cotton-mouth/dry throat which should be fought with lots of hydration. Keep a water bottle close to you while you’re planning to consume. Similarly, many users also experience dry eyes, which can be avoided with the help of eye drops that you can get from the local pharmacy.

Slightly Sativa-dominant in terms of effect, Indica-dominant in terms of plant appearance, AK-47 is a true hybrid. The plant tends to have a large central main cola with minimal side-branching — it is a medium height plant that produces buds with a high calyx-to-leaf ratio. It also boasts a fairly short flowering time for a Sativa-dominant plant, making it suitable for commercial or connoisseur purposes. The “Cherry” phenotype is the most prized one.
Unnamed mix of Colombian, Mexican, Afghani, and Thai genetic lines
Created by Serious Seeds’ main breeder, Simon, AK-47 comes from a mixed bag of genetic heritage and was basically an accidental discovery. Its name comes from its’ “one hit wonder” effects. The plant has been a long-time contest and cup winner, winning 8 competitions spread over 10+ years — a true legend of a strain with incredible staying power.
Strong, sweet, and fruity — the odor can get out of control when the plants are growing, so carbon filters are highly recommended.
Spice-heavy and a bit sweet, often tasting of sandalwood… the Cherry and Cherry-Lime phenotypes are known for matching the taste of their namesake fruits.
A balanced experience that changes according to harvest timing (late harvest produces more of an Indica-like, heavy experience), AK-47 is known for being very potent overall. The Sativa attributes keep it from being too heavy and narcotic, but there’s plenty of body effect and relaxation to go around. Appetite stimulation and muscle relaxation are the main medical properties in our experience.
Grows extremely well in hydroponic systems but also works well in soil and greenhouse conditions. Serious Seeds recommends a 5-10 day veg period from clones for maximum yield and vigor.
